Highway rest areas: what to know before you stop

State rest areas are one of the oldest parts of the interstate system, and one of the most useful. Here's what to expect.

#What's usually there

Most rest areas have restrooms, parking for cars and trucks, and a few picnic tables. Many add vending machines, drinking fountains, a pet area, and maps or travel information. Welcome centers at state lines often have staff and brochures too.

#What usually isn't

Most interstate rest areas don't sell fuel or hot food. Some turnpikes have service plazas instead, with restaurants and gas, but on most free interstates you'll leave the highway for those.

#They're built for a quick break

A rest area's ramp takes you off and back on without traffic lights or turns. For a restroom break and a stretch, it's often the fastest stop on the road.

#Quality varies

Rest areas are cleaned on a schedule, and how often depends on the state and how busy the stop is. Some are spotless; others show their age. Recent reviews from other drivers are the best guide.

#They're often open all night

Many rest areas stay open around the clock, which makes them useful on a night drive. Choose ones with lights and other people around.

#Watch the signs

Rest areas are signed a mile or two ahead, often with the distance to the next one. If the next is far, take this one.

#Some close

States sometimes close rest areas for repairs or for good. If you're counting on one for a long stretch, have a backup in mind.
