Truck stops vs. gas stations: which is the better stop?
What separates a truck stop from a gas station or a travel center, and which one to pick for a restroom, food, or a quick fill-up.
At most interstate exits, you'll choose between a big truck stop, a gas station, or a modern travel center. They're not the same stop, and the right one depends on what you need.
Truck stops are built for long stays
Truck stops serve drivers who live on the road. They're usually open around the clock, with large restrooms, showers, a restaurant or two, a big store, and plenty of parking. That makes them dependable, especially at night and in rural areas.
Busy means cleaned often, and used often
A big truck stop's restrooms see heavy traffic. The best ones are cleaned constantly and hold up well. Others fall behind at peak hours. The brand helps, but the location matters as much.
Gas stations are quick, but vary the most
A gas station at a busy exit can be in and out in five minutes. Its restroom might be spotless, a single stall with a line, or locked. Newer convenience store chains built around clean restrooms are often the best quick stop on the road.
Travel centers sit in between
Modern travel centers aim at families as well as truckers: bright stores, lots of stalls, food you'd choose to eat, and easy car parking. They're often the most comfortable all-round stop.
Parking can decide it
Truck stops put cars near the store and trucks out back, but lots can get crowded and busy with big rigs turning. Pulling a trailer or driving an RV? A truck stop's wide lanes and pull-through pumps make life easier.
Pick by what you need
For a quick restroom and fuel in daylight, a good convenience store is hard to beat. At night, in remote stretches, or when you want a real meal, a truck stop or travel center is the safer bet.
Let the app watch the road
Best Exit's drive screen shows the best stop ahead as you drive, picked for the restroom you use and what you need, and can say it out loud so you don't have to look. After you stop, it asks how the restroom was, so the next driver knows.

Reviews come from the Best Exit iPhone app. It asks right after you stop, so scores come from people who were just there.
