Road tripping with a dog: how to plan your stops

How often to stop, where to let your dog out, and how to keep them safe and comfortable at every exit.

A dog changes how you plan a drive. Your stops need room to walk, a place to go, and a plan for the moments when you're inside.

Stop every two to three hours

Most dogs do well with a break every two to three hours: a short walk, a drink of water, and a chance to go. Puppies and older dogs may need more. Plan the breaks the way you'd plan fuel.

Rest areas are made for this

Many state rest areas have a marked pet area, with grass away from the buildings and sometimes bags and trash cans. They're usually the easiest place to let a dog out on an interstate.

Leash up before the door opens

A highway exit is the worst place for a dog to bolt. Clip the leash on before you open the door, every time, even with the calmest dog.

Never leave them in a closed car

A parked car heats up fast, even on a mild day with the windows cracked. If you need to go inside, take turns with someone in the car with the air running, or pick a stop where your dog can come along.

Bring their water and bowl

Not every stop has a water bowl out. A jug of water and a collapsible bowl mean your dog can drink at any stop, and you don't depend on finding one.

Keep a clean-up kit

Bags, paper towels, and a towel for muddy paws. Pick up after your dog at every stop: pet areas stay open when people keep them clean.

Buckle them in

A crate or a dog seat belt keeps your dog from being thrown in a sudden stop, and keeps them out of your lap while you drive.

Let the app watch the road

Best Exit's drive screen shows the best stop ahead as you drive, picked for the restroom you use and what you need, and can say it out loud so you don't have to look. After you stop, it asks how the restroom was, so the next driver knows.

Stopped here? Rate the restroom.

Reviews come from the Best Exit iPhone app. It asks right after you stop, so scores come from people who were just there.
