Road trip tips
Finding an accessible restroom on the road
Where accessible restrooms are most likely, what to check before you pull off, and how to plan a drive around them.
For drivers and passengers who use a wheelchair or need more room, "there's a restroom at this exit" isn't enough. Here's how to find one that works for you.
Newer and larger stops are the safest bet
Recently built travel centers, state rest areas, and welcome centers are the most likely to have accessible stalls, family restrooms, and level entrances. Older, smaller stations often have a single cramped restroom, sometimes with a step at the door.
Family restrooms help
Many large travel centers and rest areas have family or companion restrooms: a single, lockable room with space for a helper. They're useful for caregivers, parents, and anyone who needs more room.
Check the parking and the path
An accessible restroom only helps if you can reach it. Look for marked accessible parking close to the door, curb cuts, and a path without steps or gravel. Rest areas usually have these near the main building.
Plan around the reliable stops
On a long drive, note the travel centers and rest areas along your route and plan your breaks around them. It's easier than hoping the next small exit will work.
Call ahead when it matters
If a stop is the only option for a long stretch, it's worth a quick call to ask about the restroom and the entrance. Staff can usually tell you in a sentence.
Reviews from other drivers help most
Signs and listings rarely say how a restroom really is. Recent notes from other drivers about space, grab bars, and cleanliness are the best guide.
Let the app watch the road
Best Exit's drive screen shows the best stop ahead as you drive, picked for the restroom you use and what you need, and can say it out loud so you don't have to look. After you stop, it asks how the restroom was, so the next driver knows.
Stopped here? Rate the restroom.
Reviews come from the Best Exit iPhone app. It asks right after you stop, so scores come from people who were just there.
